Proverbs 18:16 Revisited

The first time I read Proverbs 18:16, I believed it. We've all been given gifts to operate in, so why wouldn't this verse apply to all of us...to me?  This verse, this promise ...it so resonated with my spirit the first time my eyes laid hold of it! And I began to operate in that promise available to each of us by way of a prayer uttered years ago:

"Lord, may my gifts make room for me,
and bring me into the presence of kings!"

One of the first times I became aware of this verse/promise being fulfilled in my life was in 1998. President Bill Clinton was visiting the school just across the street from my house. I have graciously been given the spiritual gift of faith, so it was not a stretch for me to pray and believe for favor with and access to the President of the United States!

Since he was in our neighborhood, we wanted the chance to be a witness to him.  And my gift of faith made room for me!  The Secret Service came over to our house and said, "The President would like to meet you." The testimony is too long for this post, but we were able to share the love of Christ to President Bill Clinton on the day the Starr Report (Monica Lewinsky scandal) hit Congress. The details of our visit hit the Associated Press with this statement published in some U.S. newspapers: "Jesus loves you, Mr. President."   What radical news is this, that Jesus loves the World's Most Famous Adulterer on this day in history? As President of the United States, he was one of this world's kings, but God simply used his position of power to platform His message of love!

I always thought that this testimony was the most significant example of Proverbs 18:16 operating in my life. Until now.

Beginning the day after Thanksgiving last year, my life was sovereignly and supernaturally intersected with Heidi and Tommy Gaillard and their family. As with most connections that God orchestrates, there was common ground. My brother had a bone marrow transplant just like their daughter Jamie had.  My parents knew what it was like to travel to a different city to be at their child's bedside for months.

Our Family Thanksgiving
Back up one night. Thanksgiving night, I was with my Dad, and we were discussing our family Thanksgiving gathering scheduled for Saturday. There are 32 of us, and we always have a huge feast.  My Dad made a comment that I have never heard him make regarding our holiday meal:  "I wish we had a family to share all our extra food with."

The next day (Friday) the Lord prompted me to go visit Jamie. I had not visited her yet because I was waiting to go with my friend Cheryl, but that opportunity hadn't presented itself yet. I reluctantly went. I had only met her and her parents on several ocassions. I am not at all comfortable with hospital visits, especially by myself.  But I was compelled to go, and I shutter to think of what I would have missed had I not gone!
Jamie.
Jamie was sleeping, but I got to spend some time with her mom, Heidi, who is about my age. During that visit, the Lord said that The Gaillards were the family He wanted our family to share our meal with. Two days later, I was carrying my first delivery of food to the Gaillard Family. Jamie facebook messaged me the sweetest thank you note, which I will always treasure.

All that transpired because of my Dad's gift and desire to help people (what the Bible calls the gift of helps). I've seen it modeled by him and my Mom my whole life. On this day I was simply operating in his gifts for him :).  As for me, my gifts are different: encouragement, intercession, prophecy, faith, and some administrative gifts. I have traditionally been honored to serve "kings" in this way. But organizing meals, cooking, providing practical needs for strangers...that's just not my gift! Ask my five sisters. I have brought the same "no oven or stove needed" dishes to all our family gatherings since I was 19 years old.I am usually the one to say, "Tell me what to bring!" Then I sit nearby the whirlwind while they put everything together for our huge family gatherings.

Three weeks later, the verdict came from Jamie's own Facebook status: she was being given only days to live and needed a miracle.  My thoughts: How can I serve the family, Lord? Pray with them? Organize prayer for Jamie? Encourage them? Believe in a miracle with them?

Jamie and her brothers.
Jamie and her parents.
The Lord then made it clear to me: My gift would be containers of food for a family of 12. Not for one day, but for as long as needed. ("But this is not my gift, Lord!") When you are stretched beyond your gifting, you have no choice but to do it by faith.  It was just days before Christmas and so many people were out of town or tending to their own families. Where would the food come from? The Lord said He would put manna on the ground daily and I just needed to go out and find it. What transpired after that was amazing. Food and funds for meals were provided by friends of Jamie, by church members who only knew her by her testimony, and by complete strangers. The assistant manager at Publix personally loaded up a cart of food for the family and paid for it. An envelope of $100, $50...just handed to me. Food prepared and brought to the church for me to deliver.

Every day I drove to the hospitial, dropped off the food at the curb, hugged the family, and then set out to discover where the manna would be found the next day.  While Jamie was only given days to live, the Lord reversed the shadow on the staircase (2 Kings 20) and her remaining time had been stretched into over a week now, giving her Christmas with her family.
My friend, Christine.
Then God helped me to pass the baton to my friend Christine who has amazing community connections, and we set out two by two to gather that manna, and followed the family into a Hospice facility.

Christine and I don't quite know when and how it all happened, but over the next several days we became family, spending hours with the Gaillards, talking, laughing, crying, praying, running errands. We came with gifts in our hands--the practicial provision of food for the family--but we were the beneficiaries. These were not ordinary people. Our gifts of food made room for us and brought us into their presence in a very intimate way.

Allison, Christine and Breanna.
Allison shaved her head in Jamie's honor.

Until this time, I had not seen Jamie. In fact, I had not seen her since November. I wanted to be respectful of the family's privacy, as they had been told to say their goodbyes one by one. While they were trusting God for a miracle, they rested in the knowledge of His sovereignty and took the practical steps advised by Hospice. So, Christine and I remained in the wings.

On Sunday Heidi asked me to go into Jamie's room to speak something to her daughter. I felt like an intruder walking into that room, but my pastor had counseled me to do what the family had asked me to do and to take my cue from them. Tommy got up and said, "Let me give you some privacy" and closed the door. Jamie was not conscious, but Hospice made it clear that the hearing is still acute, even in this state. I walked out of that room changed.

My Facebook status for Sunday, January 2, at 4:27 p.m reads as follows:
"I was just unexpectedly invited into the presence of a queen.
It was humbling and unforgettable. What Beauty, what Dignity."

Jamie's Mom, Heidi.
That night, we were invited into Jamie's room for prayer and communion. We were believing for a miracle. We had no way of knowing that this was her last day on earth. I watched a father stand on the right side of his 26-year old daughter's death bed singing, "God is so good, God is so good, God is so good, He's so good to me." I witnessed a fiancé standing on the left side of his future bride's deathbed, with pain and peace so intricately mingled across His face. I stood next to a mother at the foot of her dying daughter's bed, her eyes and gentle smile radiating such peace, giving evidence that this woman had been with Jesus.

I reflect back to that night. I was not just in the presence of a queen. I was in the presence of a royal family. Courage, faith and trust in a Sovereign God is the crown they wear. Jamie's parents, brothers and sister and fiancé displayed a grace that can only come from a personal knowledge of Christ and a surrender to His perfect ways.

Christine and I
with Tommy and Heidi Gaillard.
Tommy and Heidi and their family have thanked us over and over for serving them. But we are the grateful ones. As for me, I first came reluctantly and out of my comfort zone, bearing containers of food. And always true to His promises and His Word, my gift made room for me, and brought me into the presence of greatness. Never had we met such a humble, gentle, kind, courageous and beautiful family who shared some of the most intimate moments of their family with us.

I'm so glad to have shared this experience with my friend, Christine. We will both never be the same.

Grace and Favor on Every Hard Road: Acts 28

Like the Apostle Paul, may we share our story over
and over to anyone who will listen and be willing
to pay the price for the advancement of the Gospel!
I am praying through the 28 chapters of the Book of Acts, one chapter per day, for my New Testament church. I post these prayer points on my blog as a resource for those who desire to not just read about the power and growth of The Church, but want to see it manifested today in their own New Testament church. Dare we believe it? Then let's pray it!

FATHER, according to Your Word and the principles of Acts 28...

* May all our missionaries be well received and granted kindness by the nationals on the fields where they serve.   (v. 2)
*  Give us the invincibility of the Apostle Paul when on a mission for you, God!  Only, as others witness your power in us, may it point them to You and not us. (v. 3)

* Give us favor with key people in the places where you send us to serve, here in our communities and mission fields beyond. Platform us to do signs and wonders so that many would believe. Supply all the needs of those we send out to serve. (v. 7-10)

* You order our steps, Lord, and send us to many places enroute to the destination you have marked out for us. May we be connected with believers along the way, encouraged as we go, just as Paul was enroute to Rome. (v. 11-15)

* Give us grace and favor on every hard road you require us to travel, God! And like Paul, may we share our story over and over along the way to anyone who will listen and be willing to pay the price for the advancement of the Gospel! (v. 16-20)

* May our message about the Kingdom of God be so radical that others will request to hear it! We trust you with the outcome of who will or will not believe, as foretold by the prophet. May the message of the salvation of God be sent to those who will listen. (v. 21-28)

* Break our hearts and bring us to our knees in desperation with the knowledge that eyes, ears and hearts will be dull to the gospel. Hear our prayers for the lost, Lord! Open eyes, ears and hearts, that many will see and hear and be healed. (v 26-27)

* Let us welcome all who will come, preaching the kingdom of God and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness, unhindered.  (v. 30-31)

When Wreckage Becomes a Life Preserver: Acts 27

Those who swam to shore followed on planks
and others on various things from the ship.
And thus it happened that all were brought
safely to land.   Acts 27:43-44
I am praying through the 28 chapters of the Book of Acts, one chapter per day, for my New Testament church. I post these prayer points on my blog as a resource for those who desire to not just read about the power and growth of The Church, but want to see it manifested today in their own New Testament church. Chapter 27
FATHER, according to Your Word and the principles of Acts 27...

* When the 'winds' do not permit us to go further, and proceeding ahead gives evidence of impending danger, quicken us to listen to the wisdom of godly counsel, regardless what the majority advises us to do. Our safest harbor may be a temporary and unfamiliar one. (v. 7-13)

* When we are seaborne and fear we might be 'run aground' or destroyed because of the violent wind and waves, we will let down our anchor, God, until you tell us differently! (v. 14-17)

* When our darkest days seem so bleak, where neither sun nor stars have appeared for many days, may we not abandon hope! (v. 20) But if we do, send us messengers to encourage us to not give up hope! (v.22) And when we have emerged victorious, send us to others in their own dark seasons to encourage them when they have abandoned hope.

*  When God has clearly spoken to us, may we face the threat of defeat, destruction or death with the conviction and faith of Paul: "I believe God, and it shall be as He has told me!"  Let us boldly declare this to unbelievers as well, that they may be spectators to the impossible and then believe in the God that we serve. (v. 23-25)

* May we be willing, God, to let go of and risk losing all that we are trying to salvage, even if it defies our natural reasoning. The very place our loss will take us to may be our next platform for ministry, only may we face it with faith, standing on the promise you have spoken to us. (v.26)

* When you have told us that we must 'run aground', give us the resolve to stay on the ship. If need be, cut loose the anchors and lifeboats we are clinging to save us!  Help us to remember that the safest place to be is on a sinking ship if that is where God has told us to remain. (v. 29-32)

* While waiting for the fulfillment of the supernatural promises of God, let us be practical and listen to wise counsel. (v.33-36)

* When our dark night is over and the fulfillment of our promise is finally in sight, let us persevere and do whatever is required in order to lay hold of it. (v. 38-41)

*  Grant us the same protection you did for the Apostle Paul when pursuing and completing an assignment you have required us to complete ( v. 24) (v. 42-43).

*  Just as Paul and all 276 passengers on his ship swam to safety on the broken pieces of the shipwrecked vessel, transform the broken pieces of our lives into life preservers, Lord! (v. 43-44)

An Audience with a King: Acts 26

I am praying through the 28 chapters of the Book of Acts, one chapter per day, for my New Testament church. I post these prayer points on my blog as a resource for those who desire to not just read about the power and growth of The Church, but want to see it manifested today in their own New Testament church. Dare we believe it? Then let's pray it!

Chapter 26
FATHER, according to Your Word and the
principles of Acts 26...

* What is it about Jesus that inspired such a radical transformation and devotion in the Apostle Paul? How did he go from being a religious man, hostile against the very name of Jesus who persecuted Christians, to being a friend and follower of Christ who was persecuted himself and eventually martyred for proclaiming the Name of Jesus?  May we present this same Jesus today by the evidence of transformation and devotion walked out in our own lives. (v. 4-23)

* May we never be so concerned how radical others may think we are about our faith that we lack boldness and conviction in sharing Christ. Like Paul, let it be said we are out of our minds! Remind us it is not our job to defend ourselves, but to defend the Gospel! Give us courage to respond to our mandate to testify about Jesus and His work and power in our lives, regardless how we are perceived. (v. 24-25)

* May we remember that hardship, trial and injustice against us platform us to share the gospel!  You used Paul's torture and arrest to bring him into the presence of King Agrippa. May we not waste an opportunity to speak sober truth to the 'kings' that you bring us to testify before. (v. 25-27)

* Give us favor with these 'kings', that they will be drawn to follow Christ by our testimony. (v. 28)

* May the heart of our message and mission always be like the one desire of Pauls' heart: "I would wish to God, that whether in a short or long time, not only you, but also all who hear me this day, might become such as I am, except for these chains."  (v. 29)

* Paul may or may not have been aware that he would have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar. But he was told by the Lord that he would testify about Him to Caesar, and to Caesar he would choose to go. Regardless if that meant taking a much harder road, he had clearly resolved to obey what God had called him to do. May we who follow you today have the same resolve to obey you, O God! (v. 30-32)

Coexisting Without Compromising: Acts 25

"[Paul's accusers] simply had some points of disagreement with
him about their own religion and about a dead man, Jesus, whom
Paul asserted to be alive." --Festus, Governor of Judea (Acts 25:19)
I am praying through the 28 chapters of the Book of Acts, one chapter per day, for my New Testament church. I post these prayer points on my blog as a resource for those who desire to not just read about the power and growth of The Church, but want to see it manifested today in their own New Testament church. Dare we believe it? Then let's pray it!

Chapter 25
FATHER, according to Your Word and the principles
of Acts 25

* May the doctrine of The Church be clear: the points of disagreement concerning Christianity and other religions are not minor. Christ is not simply a dead prophet as some would argue, but the Resurrected Savior of humanity.  While we must seek to peacefully coexist and can disagree respectfully, may we not be blinded with an opposing theology that says these differences are minor and resolvable, as Festus believed to be true when ruling over Paul's trial. (v. 16-19) And give us, God, the resolve and readiness of the Apostle Paul to testify respectfully, but without compromise.

Just as the Lord stood beside Paul in his jail cell and told Paul he would testify about Him in Rome before Caesar, we will be led by Him to know where we are to go and to whom we are to testify! And just as Paul was persistent despite the obstacles in getting to Rome and before Caesar, may we be persistent to pursue and fulfill that call. Give us favor with all those who are in the position to open those doors for us.  "You have appealed to Caesar, to Caesar you shall go." (v. 10-12)

* May our testimony be so compelling that others would say, "I also would like to hear this testimony." (v. 22)

Paul The Pest: Acts 24

"We have found this man a real pest." Acts 24:5

Day 24/ Chapter 24
FATHER, according to Your Word and the principles of Acts 24...

* Let it be known that the only ruler of nations through which we attain peace is Jesus; the only providence by which reform will be carried out for this nation is the providence of God. (v. 1-3)

* The Apostle Paul was referred to as a 'pest' and ringleader of dissension for proclaiming Christ. Let us remember that the very name of Jesus will invite dissension, irritation and criticism by some. Forgive us for using "peace at all cost" as an excuse to be passive about our faith. (v. 5)

* Like Paul, when asked to speak, let us cheerfully make our defense when we are falsely accused, calmly presenting the facts that can be verified by witnesses. (v. 10-15)

* Let us always do our best to maintain a blameless conscience before God and before men so that when we give our defense, our character and reputation will serve as our best defense. (v. 16)

Whitewashed Walls: Acts 23

You whitewashed walls! [Hypocrites!] You judge me
with your laws, yet in doing so violate your own laws?
Acts 23:1

Chapter 23
FATHER, according to Your Word and the principles of Acts 23...

* Let us live our lives in such a way that we can face any accuser saying, "I have lived my life with a perfectly good conscience." May the reputation of our lifestyle and actions support that statement. (v. 1)

* Reveal what is beneath every whitewashed wall in the Church. Forbid us that we should judge others with a standard to which we do not hold ourselves. Give our leaders the conviction that Paul had to call out the whitewashed walls in our midst. (v. 2-3)

* When factions arise within the church, from their ranks appoint and raise up a voice of reason and wisdom to speak among them. (v. 9)

* Tune our ears to Your call, Lord, that we would take courage and be a witness to Your cause where you have ordained us to do so, regardless the opposition or judgment that greets us there.  (v. 11)

* Every organized plot by dissenders coming against our Pastor will be revealed and thwarted, in Jesus' Name. (v. 12-22)

* Let those you appoint to protect and defend our Pastor always be on guard and prepared to surround him and close ranks if needed. (v. 23-35)
